Caste, knowledge, and the politics of becoming: Young Dalits' Choices in Contemporary Nepal

The personal trajectories of young Dalits (members of castes previously classed as ‘untouchable’) have been significantly affected by the thoroughgoing social transformations that have taken place in Nepal over the last two decades. Changing value systems buttressing the quest for social justice as well as the increased connectivity have opened new avenues for political activism. At the same time, Dalit aspirations and choices, desires and hopes impact upon the pace and nature of these dynamics. Powerful social boundaries, including caste boundaries, are now subject to social reflexivity and critique; yet, they have not lost their salience. Lived experience often collides with such ideological notions...

Lives from a Global Conflict: Cultural Entanglements during the First World War
Exhibition of the collaborative research project Cultural Exchange in a Time of Global Conflict
Widely and generally known as a phase of cruel battles, destruction and enormous suffering, the exhibition sheds fresh light on the First World War as a generator of imposed and voluntary encounters. Not only for Europeans but also for more than one million Asians and Africans, who fought on the side of the Entente in the battles of the Western front. The exhibition showcases the life trajectories of 16 individuals–some famous, some not–who lived through these extraordinary times, and whose experiences illustrate the global and varied nature of the Great War. The exhibition is one outcome of a three-year collaborative research project entitled "Cultural Exchange in a Time of Global Conflict: Colonials, Neutrals, and Belligerents during the First World War”, partly hosted at ZMO.

The First World War and The Middle East Or: From Halfmoon Camp to Reception Camp

The artist Judith Raum (Berlin) is talking about her research investigations into the work of the Berlin Nachrichtenstelle für den Orient (Intelligence Bureau for the East) during the First World War, as well as about her own artistic processing of this research in her installation Geeignete Lektüre (Suitable Reading). The economic specialist for the Arab world Alexander Flores (Hochschule Bremen) will look at the First World War in the Middle East, its immediate consequences for the region, as well as the effects up into the present day. And the archaeologists Susan Pollock and Reinhard Bernbeck (Freie Universität Berlin) will report on their excavations on the former site of the Halfmoon Camp in 2015...

The uprisings in the Arab World in 2011, the civil war in Syria and the military interventions in Libya and Iraq perpetuated an age-old image of the Middle East as a place of extreme and destructive violence. By situating violent incidents in particular processes and conflicts, the two collective volumes Urban Violence in the Middle East, edited by Ulrike Freitag, Nelida Fuccaro, Claudia Ghrawi, and Nora Lafi in 2015 and Violence and the City in the Modern Middle East, edited by Nelida Fuccaro in 2016 seek to counter the notions of a violent Middle East in order to foster a new understanding of violence beyond that of a meaningless and destructive social and political act...

The ‘New Man’, here, is understood to encompass a plethora of theoretical constructs as well as social projects closely linked to aspirations of ‘progress’, modernity and so-cial utopias (or dystopias) that were characteristic of the end of the nineteenth and the earlier part of the twentieth centuries. It was, however, not a ‘Western’ idea but can be said to have evolved simultaneously in different regions of the world where people were grappling with their own visions of possible futures. The ‘New Man’ was the idealized type of personality that could be created by way of a deliberate and planned social process....
